Are you sick of all those iPhone-wielding super nerds running around gloating that there’s an ‘app’ for everything? Well, we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but they might be right.
Some major boffins at Free University in Berlin have developed an application that allows an iPhone to drive a car. Yes, drive it. The computer scientists that built it have named it the Spirit of Berlin, presumably because the Spirit of Laziness was already taken.
Check out the video and behold the future.
Still, this is no normal car. The autonomous automobile uses Wi-Fi, GPS, a dash-mounted video camera and laser 3D sensors, all connected to an iPhone that uses a customised application, aptly named iDrive, to steer it.
If you’re thinking it’s all a bit James Bond, you’d be correct. Remember Tomorrow Never Dies? Still, the iDrive is a little more domestic in its use, and less for, erm, international intrigue and espionage.

Lol – classic iPhone line: “I have an app for that.”

Loves it.
The iPhone-controlled car is a stupid idea. It’d be more interesting to have a car that you can control with a Playstation controller, except there will be no reset button.
takes half the fun off driving
That’d be the ultimate 10 year old’s toy. They would never get bored of it.
Coldfusions idea is better, but id still rather drive the car.
why would you want to drive with an iphone?
what about those who don’t have an iphone? and more importantly, why would you want to drive that… thing of horror… evil… disgusting… PEOPLE MOVER?
How long till its in the hands of the Stig to do a lap of the top gear track?
If the Stig did a lap, he/she/it wouldn’t need to use the iPhone. He/she/it drives them telepathically.
Can Topgear do challenges, stunts and tests for ride on mowers? Because you seem to do every thing else but ride on mowers.
why did they take it to a runway to drive around in cirles? they could have easily done that in a car park. i wanted to see some speed
Um … oh-oh crossed line … crashhh !
