Geely, geely good

Posted by Top Gear Australia at 12:32 pm on Tuesday April 28, 2009

GeelyAnd you thought the dodgy Nikes were good, huh? The counterfeiting communists have struck again, but this time they’ve taken on a project just a little bigger than a fake Rolex. Well, a lot bigger.

This is the Geely Excellence, a blatant knock-off of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. And they’re nothing if not detailed, these Chinese cars.

Everything from the winged Spirit of Ecstasy sprouting from the grill, to the plush backseat is copied in perfect detail. In fact, there’s only one thing they haven’t mimicked; the price.

While a Phantom will set you back somewhere in the vicinity of one million bucks, the Geely Excellence is a steal for around $62,000.

Well the price is right, so let’s look at the stats. The Phantom is powered by a 6.5-litre V12, propelling this mobile tank to 100km/h in 5.7sec and will top-out at a limited 241km/h.

The Geely is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 and will finish the sprint in 10 seconds, which is a bit rubbish.

So what do you think? Is the Excellence a steal? Or is it just a much bigger piece of cheap knock-off crap? And if you’re a fan, what other cars would you like to see copied?

I’m sure it’d be fine for the first 6 months whilst the glue holding everything together still sticks. After that things might start falling off… I hate Korean/Chinese cars… especially rip-offs. Bah!

this one is a “much bigger piece of cheap knock-off crap” but not all korean/chinese cars are crap. the actual chinese luxury cars are equivalent to mercedes in terms of performance and quality. the main difference is the brand.

I don’t think that this will ever go into production, even though China has virtually zero respect for concepts of intellectual property the simple fact is that the Chinese uber rich are buying up the real deal, the Beverly Hills Rolls Dealership, 1st in the world for sales for years was dethroned in 2008 by Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Beijing. If you are a chinese businessman who has just bought an authentic RR every peasent made good running round in a Geely is going to really piss you off. These important chinese RR drivers will kill this abhorrance and swiftly, can’t let the plebs get ideas beyond their station.

I’ve always had a bit of an aversion to copy-cat companies (and indeed, countries) – people who take something a company has poured huge amounts of time and resources into, take it apart and see how they can build it with matchsticks and bubble-gum. It’s about time the geniuses behind the Geely commit sepuku!

What’s to stop Rolls Royce from suing Geely for copying their car?

GM was going to sue Chery for it’s Daewoo Matiz rip-off (Called “Chery QQ”), but then the US government told GM to shut the hell up because Chery is a chinese government-owned corporation, and didn’t want to upset the Chinese (and hurt import/export deals).

Rolls Royce has no such problem. So what do you reckon? Automotive court case of the century?

Anyone that puts an engine that small in to a car that big seriously needs to rethink his place in the automotive world.

stupid asians. how dare they copy the Phantom!
and can’t Rolls Royce sue them for that?
anyway, what would you rather say you drove
a “geely excelence” (which sounds nerdy and geeky)
    or “Rolls Royce Phantom”
    i’ll go with the latter.
    sounds MUCH better.

Still….. $62,000 is still quite expensive. And who wants a car made in china?

This kinda reminds me of those Mitsuoka cars that James May looked at on the show, particularly the Galou.

Personally, I can see the point of this act of plagiarism. It’s a copy of a Rolls-Royce. The whole point of a Rolls-Royce is not outright speed, it’s about luxury.

So think about it. $62k for Rolls-like luxury, compared to a million? It’s a steal!

Poor editing. Your picture IS a Phantom. The Geely Excellence looks loosely similar, but essentially nothing like a Phantom.

OK, there’s some good points in here guys, but really; why else would they make this car. The Chinese have been making cheap knockoffs of just about everything you can think of for years!!!!

The Koreans have been doing it with cars for the last 15 or so years. The Japanese have been copying the Europeans forever. Now the Malaysians are copying the Koreans and soon, the Indians will be copying whoever makes to crappiest looking piece of shit cars…….wait, that’s the Chinese isn’t it?

im going to put my head on the chopping block and say mabey the chinese got the formula right this time?

yes, i agree that the product quality may not live up to the Roller’s.but Roll-Royces werent really ever built for speed, and putting a smaller engine in to luxo-barge is not a bad idea expecaley during the economic down times. so if Geely pick up on there quality standereds you could almost call this a frugle Phantom? Now theres an oxymoron for you.

I wouldn’t buy it unless someone bought and gave a review. An honest one. It could competely fail you or could be a steal. Someone rich who could afford the real thing should take a crack at this(then ask him if he could know the difference.)

How crass and tacky can you get. If you have the ability to produce a car at least be original. Just more rubbish with “Made in China” on the label.

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.

Unquestionably imagine that which you stated. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the internet the simplest factor to remember of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed whilst other folks consider concerns that they just don’t recognize about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest as neatly as defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thanks
